Category: Things To Do

Tillamook Head is one of the major attractions in Seaside, Oregon. It is located between Seaside Golf Course to the north and Ecola State Park to the south. Many tourists plan a day to explore Ecola State Park and swing by Tillamook Head before driving down to Cannon Beach. You may also start your day with a visit to Cannon Beach and drive back to Seaside, stopping at Ecola State Park and Tillamook Head en route. Geologically, Tillamook Head is a promontory along the Pacific coast in northwest Oregon. It is five miles southwest of Seaside and around twelve hundred feet high. It is a part of the Ecola State Park and a substantive part of the area is Sitka spruce forest.

About Tillamook Head

Tillamook Head has formed some fifteen million years ago when lava from present day Idaho flooding the Columbia Gorge led to the accumulation of basalt from Columbia River along the Oregon Coast. The basalt sill that cooled down in the area was around six hundred feet thick. While Seaside is a beautiful resort city with its own serenity, Tillamook Head is a distinctly pristine place that deserves to be explored.

There are many activities in and around Tillamook Head that may interest you. There are trails you can hike, you should check out the lighthouse and you may want to visit the cheese factory. Ecola State Park has picnic areas so you can plan an entire day out with your entire family. Tillamook Rock Lighthouse off Tillamook Head thought not operational right now offers a history dating back to 1881 that is fascinating. The construction too is interesting, that of basalt and brick masonry with generous use of iron.

The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tillamook Cheese Factory deserves a place on the National Register of Yummy Places. Be it for the cheese or the ice cream or the yogurt, you have to visit Tillamook Cheese Factory that has a legacy dating back to 1851. It is located at 4175 Highway 101. More than a million people visit the factory every year, just a testament to its popularity.
